Pakistan is facing acute energy shortage due to ever increasing demand supply gap, and is a great challenge for Pakistan Foundry Industry. GIZ Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (financed by the Federal Republic of Germany) in cooperation with Pakistan Foundry Association (PFA), SMEDA and other relevant industrial associations, PFA has been selected to extend benefits for important foundry industries being the major consumers of energy.

GIZ conducted an Energy Managers Training (EMT) and a session for Enterpneoure, CEOs and MDs in Lahore and Faisalabad in August and October, 2014 respectively.

Mainly three types of trainings were conducted during this span of time:
  •  EnMS awareness session for CEOs of different Companies.
  •  Technical Training – Efficiency of energy systems
  •  Financial Training - Financial modelling of energy Projects.

The objective was to enhance technical knowledge of both the owners and the technical staff of orginizations on Energy Efficiency and consequently the effectiveness towards competitiveness and profitability of the industry. The ultimate goal of this exercise is to pool a trained energy managers team for onward management of energy system in their respective industrial units.

Furthermore, the objective to enhance the capacity of industrial associations and their technical staff to effectively operate Energy Cells of respective associations for the sustainability of enery efficiency program. They will facilitate their members on EnMS. On the request of SMEDA and PFA, a technical awareness session was also conducted in the Foundry Service Centre (FSC) Lahore in October, 2014 to enhance the technical capacity of the foundry engineers.

PFA has prime importance for Energy Managment System (EnMS) and helping foundry industry to adopt it for their benefits. During 5th International Foundry Congress and Exhibition at Faletti’s Hotel, Lahore on Dec 02, 2014, GIZ Energy Management Program headed by Mr. Bernhard Mayhofer- Principal Advisor and Dr. Frank Fecher- Sr. Advisor supported PFA to organize this workshop. PFA invited foundry SME sector for this workshop on EnMS.

The speakers were Mr. Munir Ahmed foundry advisor Mr. Mujtaba Hassan, Mr. Naeem Hussain, Prof. Muhammad Usman and Mr. Aftab Ahmed and Mr. Sohail Ahmed. The objective of the workshop was to introduce EnMS and give awarence about the Energy Efficiency measures to the foundry men of Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranawala.

Their presentation were to enhance the output of cupola furnace or induction furnace and how to reduce the energy losses in both process. There were two sessions of the workshop and the participants gained a lot of updates on EnMS. The awarness about Energy Efficiency changed their mind set and showed interest to follow Energy Management System.

The engineers from pilot project shared their valuable experinece with the participants. GIZ experts and speakers helped the participants to overcome the difficulties in the implementation of (EnMS). These are.....

  •  Inefficient conventional Technologies and unskilled foundry workers
  •  Propritor and Management are not willing to change their mind set
  •  Finincial problems to implement EnMS program.
All the Participants were satisfied with the presentations and guidelines given by the speakers especially Mr. Munir Ahmed about Cupola and Induction Furnace. The success stories of M/s Qadcast, Chenab Engineering, Ksb Pumps, Ravi Autos, Excel Engineering, SCEW and Chicago Metals, given encouragement to the participants.
Their interest aroused while looking at minor changes in EnMS brought positive results in saving money and enhanced profits.

PFA looking at their interest has decided to arrange similar workshops in Faisalabad, Gujranawala, and Multan etc. in near future. Mr Frank Fecher- GIZ appreciated the role of PFA and its contribution to uplift the EnMs in foundry sector in Pakistan. He said GIZ joins hands in hands with PFA, providing technical support through International Energy Experts like Mr. Prof. Dr. H.
